Deficiency in Omega3 fatty acids can lead to increase risk of achey joints and muscles
The role Omega3 fatty acids play in diet and nutrition is an important one.
Sources include:
* cold water fish - salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel
* unrefined vegetable oils, flaxseed oil, rape seed oil
* flax seeds
* green leafy vegetables, broccoli and cabbage
* sea vegetation
* walnuts
* tofu
Deficiency in Omega 3 fatty acid can lead to an increased risk in:
* achey joints and muscles
* depression
* forgetfulness
* dry mucous membrances, including tear ducts, vagina, mouth
* dryness of the skin and hair
* pains in the chest, irregular heartbeat
* decreased immunity to colds, flu
* acne, eczema
* digestive problems including gas, bloating, indigestion
Adding flaxseed or flaxseed oil are a very good way of ensuring adequate omega3, a rich source of ALA, in your diet.
Vegetarians
are especially at risk of being deficient in this important nutrient. Fortunately, it is not necessary for vegetarians to take fish oil to get the health benefits. Flaxseed is an excellent source of Omega3 and provides double that of fish oil.
Flaxseed oil is available in capsules, oil, tea.
If purchasing oil, select oil that is unrefined, fresh, organic. Flaxseed oil can go rancid, so you will want to buy smaller quantities, keep it refrigerated and store in a dark opague bottle or container. Check the label to ensure the company labels it as mercury free.
It should not be taken with other medications or supplements.
The recommended dose per day is 1 tablespoon.
It is most commonly used in salad dressings. To enhance absorption take with yogurt, skim milk, cheese, soy milk.
A smoothie is a delicious and easy way to get your daily dose.
Flaxseed Oil Fruit Smoothie
Place in a blender -
1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil
1/2 cup natural unsweetened yogurt
1/2 banana and 1/2 cup fresh or frozen berries - strawberries or raspberries
1 cup juice - your favorite flavor
Blend until smooth and enjoy!
If you prefer juicing, add 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil to your freshly juiced vegetable juice.
