How do I use the essential oils in aromatherapy?
Application of botanical oils, or aromatherapy, is very versatile and be used in a variety of ways to treat many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia, including physical and emotional problems.
They have been used around the world, over the centuries, in various traditions - healing, medicinal and spiritual.
The application of essential oil for healing purposes is a holistic approach treating mind, body and spirit.
Aromatherapy is easy after you have researched the various oil and determined the one best for you. There are various application options.
Each oil used in aromatherapy has individual properties and would be used for different symptoms or conditions.
When selecting a botanical oil for application, take the time to look at what symptoms they treat and any precautions specific to that particular oil.
You don't want to apply an aromatherapy oil directly to your skin that will cause irritation or burn your skin. So, educate yourself beforehand, as to whether the oil can be used full strength, or needs to be blended with a carrier oil.
Some oils can affect blood pressure, epilepsy and pregnancy so researching the contraindications is important.
There are different means of application.
<Aerial diffusion is application to the enviroment. It could be a reed diffuser, a scented candle or incense. The fragrance of the oil permeates the air in the room.
Direct inhalation does not involve contact with the skin. You simple breathe in the scent, by wafting the bottle under your nose, from side to side. Caution not to directly inhale the scent from the bottle.
Topical application includes use of botanical oils in massage, liniments, compresses, baths and skin care. Topical is anytime the essential oil comes into direct contact with your skin.
So, what are some ways to use aromatherapy when treating fibromyalgia?
Put a couple of drops of lavender oil into your warm bath water, and throw in some epsom salts. Swish the water around and, wha-lah! You have a wonderful mixture that will promote relaxation, decrease irritability, and detoxify.
If you like, you may, also, add a drop or two of clary sage or rosemary oil to decrease muscle tension and reduce muscle pain.
Try a light misting of an essential oil, such as lavender, onto your bed sheets to promote sleep.

Under a lot of stress?
Burn the incense of Roman chamomile, rose, sandalwood or ylang ylang to calm the mind and spirit.
Basil, bergamot, frankincense, ginger and patchouli are just some of the oils that can be used for fatigue, exhaustion or burnout. You can smell the scent directly from the bottle, waft below you nose, or put some of the oil on a cotton ball and place it on a small dish on your desk while you are working to help decrease fatigue or energize.
Essential oil soaps and bath oils can be purchased that will add a myriad of health benefits to your morning shower or bath, a great way to energize at the beginning of the day or soak away the stresses of the day.
Rather that spending a lot of money on expensive bath salts, simply make your own. You can buy a carton of epsom salts and simply add a few of drops of an essential oil that has the properties your are looking for.
And, of course, there are many brands of body lotions that are scented with natural botanicals to top off your self care plan.
When putting on a lotion that is scented, be aware of what the properties of the scent are. You don't want to put on a body lotion that is energizing when it is time to go to bed!
Think creatively as to how you can incorporate healing therapeutic aromatherapy into your everyday life.
