Fibromyalgia Diet ... a critical component in restoring health

Often when talking with friends, family members or health care providers, diet and nutrition in relation to Fibromyalgia becomes a topic of discussion .

When someone suggests a dietary change, most people back away, resist or outrightly say, "NO! I can't!" or "No, I just won't do that."

End of discussion.

We resist changes in the way we eat, because we tend to define ourselves by our car, our home, our job, our clothes and our lifestyle , which includes our nutritional choices.

If we do implement a change, then that definition of who we are, how we look at ourselves, as well as how others perceive us, changes as well. We, also, resist because it is really hard to change, really hard to change habits and our dietary choices are just that, habits.

You may have heard our bodies referred to as a finely tuned machine, sometimes compared to a car. We need fuel and oil and other fluids for a car to function well and to run smoothly, so the parts don't wear out prematurely.

Our body is no different. Our body and how well it functions depends on what we put into it. So, the choice we make, in terms of the quality of car engine oil, for example, will impact how well our car runs and the choices we make, in terms of nutrition and diet, similarly impact the overall functioning of our body.

If we have a car that is not running optimally, then we may choose to put in better quality oil, higher octane gas or special additives that clean the system. We make choices that will improve the performance of our car.

Likewise, when our bodies are not functioning well, as when we are exhibiting symptoms of Fibromyalgia, we need to begin to look at what we are putting into our systems and determine whether our choices are hindering or supporting the healing process.

When considering our treatment options we might begin by asking ourselves -

Do we need heavy metal detoxification?

Would a vegetarian diet be helpful in cleansing and detoxifying our system?

Are there certain foods that we are allergic to that are increasing our symptoms?

If we changed our diet, would we see a change in our health?

The purpose of the nutrition that we get from food, vitamins, minerals, oils and fibers, for example, is to feed our bodies the essentials it needs to heal or to continue to function well.

And when asking these questions, we need to be aware that our choices around the foods we ingest are critical to the way we feel, physically and emotionally, and impact our ability to heal.
