Using essential oils and aromatherapy to treat the symptoms of Fibromyalgia
Oh, that smells soooooo good!
Essential oils and aromatherapy are a holistic treatment approach that can be effective when used to treat the pain, depression, brain fog, insomnia and other symptoms that make up the syndrome of Fibromyalgia.
The use of essential oils is a therapy used for caring for the mind, body and spirit with pleasant smelling botanical oils, such as rose, sandalwood, lemon, lavender, sweet orange and peppermint. The source for the extraction of the oils can be plants, flowers, trees, fruits, bark, grasses, peels, roots, resins, seeds and rhizones.
Each of the plants, or plant parts, have therapeutic, psychological, and physiological properties that improve and prevent illness.
In many cultures around the world for many centuries, plants, and plant parts, have been used in healing, applied in folk medicine and incorporated into spiritual practices.
The oils are produced through distillation, expression, or solvent extraction of the plants, or plant parts, and are then used to create perfumes, in the production of cosmetics, as incense, as food and drink flavorings. It is, also, used in health care settings in liniments or mixed with a carrier oil for use in massage.
They should always be mixed with a carrier oil before being massaged into the skin.
There are different carrier oils that can be used, including Sweet Almond, Apricot Kernel, Avacado Oil, Cocoa Butter, Evening Primrose, Grapeseed, Jojoba, and Olive, just to name a few.
When making a decision on which carrier oil to use, consider the fragrance of the oil, as well as the consistency, texture and shelf life.
Some carrier oils, Borage, for example, have a very short shelf life and will go rancid quite quickly.
You will most likely need to try a few to find the carrier oil that works best for you.
When used in aroma therapy, such as when added to bath water or put into a diffuser, they can be inhaled directly or diffused to scent an entire room for relief of -
* pain
* care for the skin
* to alleviate tension and fatigue
* to invigorate the entire body, mind and spirit
Aromatherapy affects the brain and nervous system through stimulation of the olfactory nerves when the aromas are inhaled.
